Collect and Manage Literature in a Targeted Manner
Reference management software helps you organize your references for an academic paper and keep track of the sources you’ve used.
You can use them to save bibliographic entries along with the corresponding PDF files, organize entries using tags, and record citations and notes on the texts. While writing, you can use a reference management program to insert consistently formatted citations. The program automatically generates a bibliography from the cited publications, which you can adapt to your instructors’ guidelines with just a few clicks.
We recommend using the free software “Zotero.”
In addition, all university affiliates in the state of Baden-Württemberg can use the bwsync&share service provided by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). bwsync&share is a cloud service for synchronizing and sharing data from various programs (e.g., Zotero). In addition, the Nextcloud Office web application is available for collaborative document editing.
Zotero
Zotero is a free reference management program that can be used on all major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux).
With Zotero, you can
• collect and manage your references,
• import references from academic databases and library catalogs,
• automatically format your bibliographic data and generate reference lists for term papers, theses, dissertations, or manuscripts,
• create notes for entries, link related entries/notes, add tags, and create thematic folders and collections.
To capture references directly from your browser, you’ll need the Zotero Connector. A plugin for your word processor (Word, LibreOffice, etc.) is automatically installed along with Zotero.

bwSyncandShare
With bwSync&Share, students and employees of institutions in the bwSync&Share network and the DFN Cloud have access to a cloud service for storing up to 50 GB of data. You can register for free as a “Member of the bwSync&Share network” at bwsyncandshare.kit.edu.
Then select your home institution and enter your local username and password.
