Publishing in Open Access

Open Access means that scholarly publications are made freely available on the Internet at no cost. Readers can read, download, save, and cite these texts without having to register or pay a fee. The goal of Open Access is to make research findings available more quickly and on a global scale, to increase the visibility of science, and to facilitate the exchange between research, teaching, and society.

While access to Open Access publications is free of charge, authors or their institutions may incur costs during the publication process. For example, when publishing scholarly articles, authors often pay so-called Article Processing Charges (APCs) to the publisher so that the publisher can make the article freely accessible. 

There are also free Open Access options that do not incur APCs. These include certain Open Access journals as well as repositories.

The Weingarten University Library provides OPUS W, a shared repository for both universities.

In addition, both universities are participating in two of the DEAL transformation agreements.
